Taylor: Secondary Is 'Working As One'

Safety Sean Taylor spoke with Redskins.com as the team began preparations for its Week 6 matchup against the Chicago Bears:

Q: How will the secondary deal with the loss of Matt Bowen:

A: "He’s a big loss. He’s a guy with a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge. But we have Andre Lott and Ryan Clark and Todd Franz. Guys are going to have to step up and fill his shoes."

Q: Does losing Bowen make you feel like you want to shoulder more of the work or more of the pressure?

A: "There’s no extra pressure. We’re all working as one back there in the secondary. As long as we’re on the same page, we’ll be handling everything well and we’ll be communicating with each other."

Q: In last Sunday’s game, what was going through your mind when the score went from 10-0 to 14-10 and the [Redskins] defense hadn’t even been on the field?

A: "Just get the ball back. That’s it. Those kinds of things happen in football."

Q: How do you feel like you’re progressing on the field?

A: "I’m progressing. I haven’t had a lot of work lately because teams haven’t been throwing downfield deep as much. I’m doing what I can to contribute on the run defense."

Q: Are you feeling more comfortable with the defense?

A: "That’s usually what happens when you play. Slowly but surely, you work yourself into a groove. The season’s a long haul, so if I’m working myself up, I’ll be ready for anything the offense throws at me."

Q: With the three interceptions you had in the preseason, did you expect it would be like that every week in the NFL?

A: "If they throw the ball my way, yes. You have to understand, sometimes when it’s a close game, you’re not always going to get the shots downfield and the opportunity for making plays on balls. That’s just being smart on the offense’s part. I’m not worried about it. I know I forced turnovers in the preseason, but the season’s not over. With five games so far, you can’t be saying, ’What’s going on?’ You just have to be patient."

Q: How frustrating is it for you that the team is 1-4 right now?

A: "The thing is, no one is beating us down physically. We just need to learn how to put teams away when we have a lead. It’s frustrating but we know what type of team we have."

Q: Do you look forward to playing a real physical team like the Bears?

A: "I think it’ll be a real good matchup for us because we need to challenge ourselves against big backs like Thomas Jones."
