The Redskins released veteran safety Vernon Fox and a pair of backup defensive lineman on Sunday, as the team begins to trim its roster.

Also released was defensive end Dorian Smith and defensive tackle Babatunde Oshinowo.

The Redskins must release two more players by Tuesday to comply with the league roster limit of 75.

Fox, a seven-year NFL veteran, had emerged as a special teams standout for the Redskins the last two seasons. He started six games at strong safety in 2006.

Fox struggled with a groin injury last season. He suffered a wrist injury in Saturday’s preseason game against Carolina.

But the Redskins drafted a pair of rookie safeties in Kareem Moore and Chris Horton. They both have impressed in preseason.

Moore assumed a starting role at free safety each of the last two games as LaRon Landry rehabs an injury. Horton has two sacks.

Smith and Oshinowo joined the Redskins in the middle of training camp. Smith is an undrafted rookie. Oshinowo is a second-year player.

-- SINCLAIR’S BACK

Matt Sinclair was having a solid preseason, but he suffered back spasms last week and he missed practice time.

Now, Sinclair is scheduled to see a back specialist on Monday because the injury is not healing the way team officials had hoped.

Sinclair, in his second season with the Redskins, was battling for a backup job at linebacker.

Recent free agent pickup Alfred Fincher may have an opportunity for a roster spot if Sinclair does not return fast. Fincher recorded two special teams tackles against Carolina.

Marcus Washington, who sat out Saturday’s preseason game vs. Carolina with hip soreness, is "going to be fine," Jim Zorn said.

Jon Jansen is expected to be sidelined a couple of days as he recovers from a sprained foot from Saturday’s preseason game against Carolina.

"The sprain is very low," Jim Zorn said. "We’ll see how he comes out of it. He’ll lose a little bit of practice time, but that’s it."

Jansen is unlikely to play this Thursday against Jacksonville in the preseason finale.

With Todd Wade still slowed by an ankle injury, Stephon Heyer or Chad Rinehart may start at right tackle vs. the Jaguars.
